- Tom Daley shares his best travelmemories – and his idea of holiday hell
- Unsurprisingly, his dream breaks revolve around high-adrenaline sports
- The bronze medallist will travel to Rio next year for the Olympic Games
EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?
My family used to stay in caravans with my aunts, uncles and cousins, and spend the summer mucking around and having barbecues.
WHAT’S YOUR FONDEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?
I remember my first trip to Canada — it was so snowy. One of my team-mates, Claire, ran towards a pile of snow to do a somersault, but she slipped and went head first into the snow, so all you could see were her legs flailing in the air. We had a lot of fun on that trip!

WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM TRAVEL COMPANION?
Someone who loves exploring and who’d be up for trying new things. I’m not a fan of lazing by the pool for a whole week. They’d also have to be a foodie!
WHERE WOULD YOUR DREAM ROAD TRIP TAKE PLACE?
I’d love to go back to New Zealand. My best friend Sophie and I spent a week driving around the country in a campervan when we were filming Tom Daley Goes Global. It’s an action junkie’s paradise.

Sight-seers: The couple appeared in good spirits as they stopped to pose by the Golden Gate Bridge
Downtime: In 2011 the diver also made waves with a group of friends at Busch Gardens Tampa
AND THE MOST ADVENTUROUS THING YOU’VE EVER DONE?
Anything that gives me an adrenaline rush. I did a parachute jump in Thailand, a canyon swing in New Zealand and a bungee jump in Switzerland. And I’d love to try a bobsled run.
WHAT’S THE NAUGHTIEST THING YOU’VE DONE ON HOLIDAY?
I always eat too much and come back twice the size. My coach is never happy.
WHAT’S YOUR IDEA OF HOLIDAY HELL?
Anywhere I have to dive off a diving board. We only get three or four weeks off training every year — seeing a ‘no diving’ sign by the pool makes me happy.

MOST TRAUMATIC TRAVEL RELATED EXPERIENCE?
I had a pretty scary experience on a flight with the British diving team last year. The engine began to smoke and we had to a make an emergency landing in Russia. Everyone was pretty shaken up.
WHERE’S YOUR NEXT TRIP?
I haven’t got any holidays coming up, but I have just returned to training after three weeks in Florida with all of my friends as a late 21st birthday celebration and we visited Busch Gardens Tampa.
I am a massive thrill-seeker so I love going on roller coasters, but it was brilliant to see their reactions — especially on Falcon’s Fury! Of course, I’m gearing up for next year’s Olympics in Rio.
